Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, is an anti-hero in the Marvel universe of the Marvel Comics publishing house. Created by screenwriter Fabian Nicieza and cartoonist Rob Liefeld, the fictional character first appeared in the comic book The New Mutants #98 in February 1991.
Initially, Deadpool was described as a super villain when he first appeared in The New Mutants and later in the issues of X-Force, but then evolved to become an anti-heroic character as he has since become known.
Deadpool is a disfigured mercenary with a superhuman capacity for accelerated healing and capable of physical prowess. The character is also known as "Merc with a Mouth" because of his tendency to constantly discuss and joke, including breaking the fourth wall (by talking to his readers) to cause humorous effects and making recurring gags.
Adapted to the cinema, the character appears in the series of films on the X-Men, appearing in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) as well as in his own adaptations: Deadpool (2016) and its successor, Deadpool 2 (2018).
Deadpool was originally created as a parody of the villain Deathstroke, a DC Comics mercenary named Slade Wilson. His costume is taken from Spider-Man, because its creator found it easy to draw, Deadpool having been presented as "a Spider-Man with guns" by its creators.
In addition to his devastated appearance, he has vocal cord injuries, which explains why he always speaks with a yellow (or modified) bubble. He is very often represented with two voices speaking in his head (represented by a yellow and a white bubble). This is not natural, appearing when he found himself fused to the Madcap character (which is then expressed through the white bubble). The voices will disappear when Madcap is definitively separated from Deadpool.
Although his main serious idylls are with women, Deadpool is pansexual and cultivates recurrent jokes where he heavily flirts with many male heroes (like Spider-Man, Thor or Colossus).
He knows almost all the important characters of the Marvel universe.
He speaks a large number of languages, including sign language.
He has (or claims to have) a cow phobia, having even fought with one of them one day.
